According to Zimbabwean parliament speaker Jacob Mudendahe, the country's embattled President has accepted to resign in a letter he received from him.
In the letter, Mugabe has accepted the term of his stepping down and also said that he decided to step down to allow the smooth transition of power in the country, according to Reuters.
"I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect," the letter reads, according to Sputnik.
Robert Mugabe has earlier refused the Party's order for him to stepdown from power which has triggered the ruling party to kickstart impeachment process to oust the embattled President but Mugabe's letter has put an end to the impeachment process.
Reuters reported that the news of Mugabe's resignation was met with unbridled joy as Mudendahe was reading the president's address.
