The first Russian-built Beriev A-100 airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft for the Russian aerospace took to the sky for the first time on Sunday from the facility of Tagannog aviation scientific-technical complex (TANTK).
The aircraft Beriev A-100 aircraft was constructed on the base of the Il-76MD-90A (IL-476) transport aircraft and is projected as a replacement for the Beriev A-500 AWACS aircraft which is the backbone of the AWACS capabilities of Russia.
The aircraft maiden flight was used to review the capabilities of the aircraft and to check the aerodynamics characteristics, the performance of avionics and part of the equipment of the radio engineering complex.
The Russian Aerospace Forces has already placed order for more than 10 units of the aircraft and the are expected to be ready by 2020.
