According to Techcrunch, “Intelligence is what allows us to create forms of governance, cure disease, create art and music, discover, dream and love” Intelligence is also what decide that these things, rather than other things are worth doing by translating discoveries into meanings, experience into values and values into decisions. The Human Intelligence (HI) has helped us to create civilizations and waltz through different stages and ages in our existence from the stone age where all we could create was stone and crude implements to hunt and skin animals. The steady but progressive maximization of our awareness and potentials has seen us develop ourselves and society to the information age but one thing we most times overlook is the fact that we may have created what we lead to our extinction.
The Information age has seen humans achieve a lot of landmark achievements than any other ages humanity has experienced within a shorter period and we are reaping even more dividend from globalisation which it makes even more profound. Humans are more productive, and there are even more room for leisure and luxury but right under humans nose, the greatest creation of her vast potential which is Artificial Intelligence is pushing her back to the wall of irrelevance and extinction..
Artificial Intelligence(AI) which simply means the man-like characteristics shown by Computers, Robots and Machines are currently smashing records of Human Intelligence (HI) in various fields. AI has already defeated the best human players of the famous board games; Go and Chess. With 3D printing technology, construction of houses that will normally take humans 30 days are now being constructed within 6 hours. According to Market Watch, Robots can now perform better than humans as Bartender, Farmers, Bomb Squad, Paralegal and doc-review-focused attorney, Soldiers and can work better in deadly environment and robots will take up up to 30% of this jobs and many more before 2030.
In a Statement made by U.S Army General. Robert Cone “in an effort by the U.S Army to become a smaller, more lethal, deployable and agile force, over 20% of her soldiers will be robots in the next 15 years” which practically means the U.S army will have almost 50,000 less humans in 15 years and more than 50% of the world’s military personnel will be Robots before 2050. Also at the Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco, it is not humans but robots who fill prescriptions. According to the university website, during its first phrase, there was no errors in the 350,000 doses the robot filled and none of what they prescribed affected patient’s earlier medications.
Robots are on a daily basis moving up the corporate ladder and expanding their skills with a productivity and retention rate humans can’t replicate and this is putting more and more humans out of work on a daily basis. Martin Ford, the author of ‘Rise of the Robots’ argues that “AI and robotics will soon overhaul our economy”. He also argued that “Machine will create new economic state whereby humans will live more productive lives and this may help close the huge gaps between the people in the lower half of the society and those above”. Though this is a good argument but what if things didn’t go this way and the people that are put out of work due to a robot or machine that is more efficient and faster than them find no other place to fit in, what then can we do?
Also militarily, with the current level of development in robotics and AI, before 2030, AI and Robotics will have the same type of awe and fear inspiring factor a nuclear warhead has today and its force multiplying factor will give a relatively smaller state the ability to go to war with a much larger state as an equal or even with a little edge and with the same negotiation power a nuclear armed state has today. AI and Robotics will also change the face of terrorism as robots will probably be used as suicide bombers and soldiers and this may make the menace harder to tackle.
About 80% of Americans work on farm before the Mechanisation and Industrial age but now its 2% and this made food cheaper and people had more money to spend and more time for leisure and luxury but what made this transition favourable to humanity is that those who left the farm had works which was created by the industrialization to go to but that will most definitely not be the case in the transition from Information age to Artificial Intelligence age. Then what do we need over 7 billions heads for?
Notwithstanding what humans has achieved in the course of her existence, we still have little access to our brains , limiting our access to co-evolve with silicon based machine in powerful ways. Since through our potentials, we have raped into existence from the science-fiction world a creation (soon to be) smarter, more productive, more efficient and magnificent than us, we need to expand our potentials by unlocking the untapped capabilities of the human brain and connecting to these new capability. That is for us to stay relevant and maximise our potential to relevancy in this coming age, we must come up with a way to merge Human intelligence (HI) with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Though human has connected with computer long ago, e.g typing words on computer or chatting with people halfway around the world but merging with computer on a deeper level is a necessity man cannot ignore now. According to a Quora user, merging all of humanity with computer which would allow us to do complex equation instantly by just thinking, having access to all the information available on google by just thinking and improving our life expectancy by enhancing our body capability machine spares and fighting diseases that keep us weak and also combating anti-ageing cells with nano-tech correct corrective and enhancing cells.
Maximising our awareness and potential to tackle this maybe the only thing the relevancy of human existence hangs on.
