US Navy test new Laser Weapon in Persian Gulf

It was reported by media on Tuesday that the US Navy tested the Laser Weapons System (LaWS) in the Persian Gulf.

According to a CNN repoerter, there is nothing like this new weapon in the arsenal of any country 'yet'. The new LaWS system can travel at the speed of sound which is 50,000 times faster than the fastest Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). It was deployed and test fired on the board of the USS Ponce transport ship

"It is far more precise than a bullet… It's not a niche weapon system like some other weapons that we have throughout the military where it's only good against air contacts, or it's only good against surface targets, or it's only good against, you know, ground-based targets — in this case this is a very versatile weapon, it can be used against a variety of targets," Christopher Wells, the ship captain, said, as quoted by the reporter.

A drone was used as a target to test the capability of the new weapon system and it successfully shot it down as the weapon crew were able to focus the system on it. According to the reporter, the laser destroyed the aircraft by heating to a temperature of up to thousands of degrees.

Lt. Cale Hughes, laser weapons system officer, told the reporter that the LaWS operated within an invisible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, being absolutely silent and "incredibly effective at what it does.
