Thirty-four Cameroonian soldiers from the elite Rapid Intervention Brigade has been reported missing on Monday, a day after an army vessel capsized off the country’s southeastern coast.
The ship which was carrying 37 people including the crew of the ship was on its way to Bakassi when it capsides and sank, Defence Minister Joseph Beti Assomo said in a statement.
The circumstances that led to the boat mischap is still shrouded in obscurity but an investigation in ongoing to assess the cause of the incident.
The Rapid Intervention Brigade is in the front line of Cameroon’s fight against Boko Haram jihadists in the north which have often time spill its attacks out of Nigeria touching Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria in the process.
Cameroon was attacked by two Boko Haram suicide bombers early this month killing over 15 people in the process after months of relative peace.
