After the US shot down a syrian warplane over syria some hours ago, Russia has vowed to "engage US military directly in the war if necessary and will treat every US plane flying over the region as target" according to a statement released by Russian Ministry of Defence.
The action by the US and the reaction of Russia to it shows that the situation in Syria is rapidly escalating to a whole new level which may see Russia and the US engage in combat against each other directly.
