Australia in a bid to boost its capability to defend herself in space has developed a state-of-the-art miniature satellite and is ready to launch into space after successfully putting it through grueling tests that simulate the harsh environment of Space.
The Spacecraft was jointly developed by a team of Space engineers from UNSW Canberra (The University of New South Wales campus at the Australian Defence force Academy) and Defence Science and Technology group and some Spacecraft engineers from Australian National University.
''The cubesat is the first of two in a joint program called Buccaneer to build Australian capability to develop and fly Satellite missions'' says Professor Russell Boyce, Director UNSW Canberra Space. According to Boyce, Buccaneer is a stepping stone to an increasingly sophisticated homegrown Australian Space capability that can take advantage of rapidly transforming technology and a boom in the Asia-Pacific Space sector.
This development is another stepping stone in miniaturization of electronics and sensors, and a reduction in satellite launch costs and an opening door to game changing applications of innovative Spacecraft.
