A South African lady, Miss Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned Miss Universe on Sunday at the pageant held in Las Vegas.
The 22-year-old lady beat other contestants from other contesting countries while Miss Colombia and Miss Jamaica came second and third respectively.
Demi-Leigh hails from Western Cape Province and recently earned a business management degree from North-West University.
Before her victory at the Miss Universe Beauty Peagent, she helps train women in self-defense and steps to take if they were a victim of abuse.
Her passion for self-defense was reinforced when she was hijacked and held at gunpoint about a month after winning her title as Miss South Africa, she said in a video on the Miss Universe website.
