misconception about the capabilities of Land Forces (Nigerian Army)

  I was at a viewing center a fortnight ago to watch a match between the English Football Club I am supporting and one of their rivals in the English league, so that I can get a very comfortable seat very close to the TV, I got to the viewing centre 30 minutes before kick off and fortunately for me I met a very interesting debate on ground where only two people were standing against more than 20 people.

    The two people against the majority in this debate were trying to correct them that though the Nigerian Army is strong (Probably the strongest in Africa), but it is not logical and very wrong to agree that with their current might, they can go against the army of any country in the world.

The majority were however adamant, and maintained that the Nigerian Army are the strongest in the World and can go against even the American Army and emerge victorious.

My Opinion

Although warfare is no more in the realm it was during the World Wars where close gun duel between country's army was very common and a stronger and well trained army victorious yet, a strong land force is still essential in the modern day warfare. However many factors besides training are responsible for the performance of a land based force, especially in this new age.

* Motivation - 'A motivated Soldier they say is better than 10 unmotivated ones'. A motivated soldier set his mind to task better, perform more efficiently and won't turn his back in the heat of battle. No matter how trained a Soldier is, without motivation, he is next to nothing and a label as the best will amount to nothing against a more determined and motivated opponent.

* Good Equipment and Hardware - Starting even from little details like underwear to the boots and cloths to the more important ones like rifles, APCs,Tanks....an army must be equipped with the best, and what he is convenient with. You can't expect to go against an army with T-90MBT and modern rifles with T-32 MBT and cold war era rifles and expect to find it easy. Like being motivated, good uyhequipment are also a great determinant of an army's performance. "The lion with the sharpest teeth bite deepest"

* Close Air Support- Most of the Nigerian army's battle with Boko Haram terrorist before 2016 showed us that even against ill -trained people if you don't have eyes in the sky and not ready to do some strafing,  you may have yourself to blame  The air-arm of the army or the air force (for army without air arms) is very essential in a land battle to the extent that whoever has air superiority will most likely emerge victorious. Air bombardment of enemy positions may create the way for a land base force to throw the breathtaking punch.

*Communication - A secured communication line to organise and direct your soldiers during land assault is also very essential. What can be made of a battle where what your soldiers are doing is "Freestyle". Communication is also very essential for a land based force to direct and coordinate them to avoid mistakes and achieve set objectives.

So before you conclude who is better or who is best, firstly, ask yourself this questions;

*Are they motivated?

*Are they well trained?

*Do they have good and modern weapons, military hardware and kits?

*Do they have eyes and guns in the air?

If you feel the list is not complete, add yours...
