In defiance of Madrid government, Catalonia declared secession from Spain and Independence and are prepared to impose direct rule over the region.
This move by Catalonia has been ruled as invalid by Spanish Parliament but the motion was passed in the regional parliament in Barcelona. The regional parliamentary session which was boycotted by opposition parties said 'Catalonia constituted an independent, Sovereign and Social democratic state and called on states and international organisation and institutions to recognise its independence'.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy while addressing the issue called for calm and said the rule of law would be restored.
In the General voting conducted by Catalonia to decide the issue, 90% voted in favour of Independence and also in the regional chamber 70 voted in favour of independence and 10 opposed and 2 absentions in the 135-seat chamber.
Spain’s Senate is still to vote on whether for the first time to enact Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which empowers the government to take “all measures necessary to compel” a region in case of a crisis which would enable Madrid to fire Catalan leaders and take full control of the region's Police, finances and Media.
