Russia claimed that when this missile defense system is finally out, it will be at the top of the chain of defense system in the world. Russia gave 2016 or 2017 as the likely time this defense system will be out but due to some production complications, the time may well extend over 2019 before it is ready but even at its prototype stage, the S-500 seems to have no match in US or NATO arsenal.
According to a defense analyst Dave Majundar, "the cutting-edge S-500 missile defense system is so good that the best stealth warplanes in the Pentagon's arsenal will be unable to do anything about it.
This Missile defense system has a range of 600 Kilometers and can simultaneously intercept up to ten ballistic missile and hypersonic missile travelling at up to Seven Kilometers per second, that is well over 25,000km per hour and also can engage targets at an altitude of up to 200 Kilometers (more than 120 miles). The S-500 can shoot down incoming threats in the earth's atmosphere and outside the earth's atmosphere.
The S-500 apart from being a ICBM and IMBM killer, due to its powerful radar. It can also track and shoot down Aircraft including those that are stealth, UAVs as well as low Earth Orbit Satellites, Orbital Weaponry abd Space destruction devices.
S-500 will be equipped with 776-N-N and 776-N-Ni interceptor missiles. The missiles will use the hit-to-kill technology which is very similar to the American THAAD system method of killing missiles. The missile destroys its target through physical impact.
The S-500 when finally out will replace the existing S-300 which form the bulk of Russia defense system and will complement the S-400. The S-500 is potent enough the put the fear of God in any NATO or US pilot flying any warplane close to Russia Airspace.
The S-500 will form the upper tier Russia's layered integrated air defense system and will be used in safeguarding Moscow and Central Russia.
