Hopefully, the Nigerian Air Force will take possession of the JF-17/FC-1 Xialong that has been on the line for years now before the end of this year (2016). The lightweight, Single-engine, Multirole Combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China can be used for aerial reconnaissance, ground attack and aircraft interception and will give the Nigerian air force more options in the air but after this aircraft, what should the Nigerian Air Force go for next?
Note: The probability of the Nigerian air force getting a western aircraft especially of US origin is a little higher than zero considering the disdain the American has shown to request by the Nigerian military to acquire military hardware, even ones that are not lethal otherwise the F-15 strike eagle or the General dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon would have been a strong option to consider with the formal being a air-to-air superiority fighter and the later being a multirole fighter. The Dassault Mirage which is from Europe (France) is also a viable option but the price tags per unit of this birds makes it a no going area for the Nigerian air force considering their budget.
The east on the other hand can boast of some advanced aircraft that can hold their own against western aircraft but out of the countries that are producing aircraft in this zone, the Russian are in a class of their own.
It should be noted that the JF17 is a light weight aircraft and any future addition to the Nigerian air force fleets of jet should be a heavy weight aircraft that can make any country think twice before messing with the Nigerian air force.
Of all the aircraft Russia have to offer within the means of Nigeria, and which will further strengthen them tactically and technically the under listed aircraft should take the front role.
